Troubleshooting

Jenn-Air Cooktop Troubleshooting

Jenn-Air builds gas, induction, and radiant cooktops, and each fails a little differently. Here is how to read the symptoms across the three types.

Short answer: A gas burner that clicks but will not light is usually a dirty igniter. An induction zone that will not heat is often the wrong cookware. A radiant element that stays cold is usually the element, switch, or control. Cleaning and cookware checks fix some; element and control faults need a technician.

Gas Burners

The most common gas cooktop complaint is a burner that sparks but will not light. Clean the cap, clear the port, and dry the igniter, since residue and moisture break the spark path. If a single burner stays dead while the others light, that igniter or its wiring is the likely fault. A burner that lights but burns yellow points to the altitude air-fuel mix rather than a broken part.

Induction Zones

An induction zone works only with magnetic, flat-bottomed cookware, so the first check is the pan; a non-magnetic pot simply will not heat and the zone may flash. If the cookware is correct and the zone still will not respond, or it shows a fault or shuts off under load, the induction element or its control board needs testing. Keep the cooling vents clear, since a hot electronics bay will reduce power to protect itself.

Radiant Glass Elements

Radiant elements cycle on and off to hold a set temperature, which is normal. A zone that never reaches heat, cycles erratically, or stays off usually has a failed element, a worn infinite switch, or a control fault. These need testing to isolate. Cracks or pitting in the glass are a separate concern and should be looked at promptly. All are defined cooktop repairs.

Testing induction cookware: a fridge magnet that sticks firmly to the base of a pan confirms it will work on induction. If it does not stick, the pan is the problem, not the cooktop.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Will One Jenn-Air Gas Burner Not Light?
Clean and dry the burner cap and igniter and clear the port. Residue or moisture is the usual cause. If a single burner still will not light while the others do, that igniter likely needs replacement.
My Jenn-Air Induction Zone Will Not Heat. What Is Wrong?
First check the cookware. Induction needs magnetic, flat-bottomed pans, and a zone will not respond to non-magnetic pans. If the pan is correct and the zone still will not heat or shows a fault, the element or control needs service.
Why Does My Jenn-Air Glass Cooktop Element Cycle on and Off?
Radiant elements cycle to hold a temperature, which is normal. Constant cycling that never reaches heat, or an element that stays off, points to the element, the infinite switch, or the control, which need testing.
